Give me your short-run book printing experiences
Hey everyone,
So I’m researching printers for my club’s artbook, but I’m having a hard time figuring out what places would be good to look at. Have you self-published or been part of a short-run artbook? Tell me what services you used and your experiences with them, including paper types, order sizes, book length, whether they provide hard copy proofs, the turnaround, etc. Softcover, perfect-bound, full color art or comic books only.
My club used to use a fairly nice small printer in Santa Monica, but I am producing the book and am no longer in that area to be able to get there on a weekday. Also, I honestly have no idea how their color printing is because the interiors were always b&w.
If your printer somehow, bizarrely, allows for part of the book to be in color and the other in black and white, that would be really great for cutting down costs for me because some of the book is just b&w works.
My friend told me one of the artbooks she’s been a part of used printpapa.com for part of their runs, but it looks like they only print on 70lb matte paper and I have no experience with what that kind of paper is like for detailed color art. If you have any experience with this company especially with their short-run softcover options please especially let me know!
One last thing is I live in the LA area, but would prefer to order online because I am busy during the week and can’t get to most areas of the city easily.

ughhhhh i suddenly want to work on spiral universe again… i finally started redesigning the characters with some help from happydorid and then i found my old playlist of songs I would listen to while working on it… ugghhh it’s giving me all the feels…
It’s a story about how people interpret and give meaning to the objective natural world, and how culture grows because of this… It’s about a neolithic culture that wears masks all the time… it’s also got some love story stuff in there… and i designed the metaphysics to be an allegory of particle astrophysics… oh yeah and i want it to make you cry and feel as bad as watching kaiba did… clearly I’ve been way too ambitious with this story, but i really really want it all to come together ;_; (ok, the love story part will take the axe if i need to pare it down, even though that was the original idea lol)
man, it’s got deer, foxes, dogs, woolly goats, monsters, dreams and afterlifes, shamans and smoking things, normal people, the milky way, spirals (duh), bad decisions and running around in the forest, i’m excited

i’m supposed to be studying but I can’t stop looking at Xamag’s gallery…
i can’t even pick out one to put on this blog because they’re just all so perfect ;; i can’t even!! describe! such nice flowy lines on the characters yet everything is solid and nicely weighted.. i want to achieve that! so cute, but not ‘cutesy’… adkfalsdkjfajdflsa even her painted style is gorgeous… i wish i had time to draw today…
so yeah this is just me gushing because otherwise it would be stuck in my head all day!!

i… totally never picked up on that? it always looked like she got bit, then was let go and then got eaten or something. i mean without like pausing the video or something there was no way i could tell the tiny falling thing didn’t have a head? it just totally surprised me that everyone immediately got it and i felt like i was missing something

ok i have this really dumb question but it’s been bothering me ever since madoka became popular
is there actual evidence that mami was decapitated by whatever that witch’s name is instead of just being eaten/chomped up? Because i saw the scene as “oops she got eaten” but all the fanart and i mean ALL THE FANART and memes and parodies and stuff is strictly just her head getting bitten off?? and it’s always really confused me and i went back and watched it and i don’t see it???? why????
Hello new people! I saw an influx of notes on Lockheart pages and stuff after my dear friend happydorid promoted it, and I thought I needed to make some disclaimers so people don’t get disappointed in the future haha… Mainly the thing is that I’m only posting the first chapter of the comic because…. that’s all I have done! That’s why the posting schedule is consistent hahaha. Since I’m still in school I don’t know when I’ll be able to start the second one ;; Anyway thanks for the notes so far, I hope you like it :D
Comic Posting Schedule?
so I want to start posting the first chapter of that comic I started like a year ago (and only have that chapter done…), but I couldn’t decide on a posting schedule?? It’s graphic novel-style so single page updates might not be great, but I don’t really see any comic post 2 at a time and I don’t want to run out of pages too quickly. If I was posting 1 page at a time, I would do either a MWF or TTh schedule (also can’t decide between those??) but if 2 pages at a time it’d probably be once a week or MF? I dunno!! Please tell me what kind of posting schedule you like!
Also i’m only asking for this for the first chapter postings, because i don’t know when i’ll get around to even making a second chapter, let alone having a regular posting schedule.

Hmm happydorid’s comment also made me think it would be fun and relaxing to have a stone wall of moss and lichen fed by a dribbling cascading fountain, wow i love moss and lichen but i worry having that kind of environment (mossy, slow-moving water) in my house could breed things that are bad for me? is this a thing? i would love to keep pet moss.
ugh i’m so busy and sick right now but how about a nice list of plants and animals i would like to keep sometime eventually!! Now that I’ve had my succulents for over a year I’m thinking “that was the first check off the list!” Here are other things I want to keep:
- Sensitive Plant
- Venus Fly Trap
- A Mantis
- 3 or 4 quails
- Kitties (either 2 cats or 1 cat and 1 dog)
- A big ol’ fluffy doge
- I really love snakes but I dunno if I’d want to keep one?? maybe a little baby vine snake if that’s possible?
And while I’ll probably never have the time to invest in it, my long-shot dream is of course to be:
- A falconer *___* I don’t even have a preference for what bird to end up with, any at any level are wonderful
